Introducing the MSP430G2xx2 family of Value Line devices

The MSP430G2xx2 family adds 64 devices to the Value line portfolio offering more options in memory size and features for use in a variety of consumer and industrial applications. Key features of the G2xx2 family include:

¡´ Same ultra low power consumption as G2xx1 devices.
¡´ Flash size up to 8 KB.
¡´ 256Byte SRAM.
¡´ 10-bit ADC, Comparator peripheral options¡C
¡´ Innovative capacitive touch sense enabled IOs to reduce system costs in such applications.
¡´ 14/20-pin TSSOP, 16 pin QFN and 20 pin PDIP packages available.


Roadmap of more than 150 new low cost MCUs delivers superior performance and leading ultra-low power to a broad range of applications, including safety, security, and touch sense. MSP430 has dramatically increased the performance to price ratio for customers.


Capacitive Touch Sense IOs


The G2xx2 and upcoming G2xx3 families feature an innovative capacitive touch sense IO design. Additional circuits are added to regular GPIO modules to generate the pin oscillation, eliminating external components. Advantages to the designer using this include:

¡´ No external components to create the oscillation.
¡´ The cap can be connected directly.
¡´ No need for external MUXes to allow multiple pads.
¡´ Each pad can directly serve as a cap sense input.

Bill Of materials at the system level is reduced (e.g. reduced passives, up to a few cents each) leading to a lower system cost.

MSP430 Value Line devices are integrated with intelligent peripherals including ADC10 with DTC, comparators, SPI, I2C, and 16-bit timers. Upcoming MSP430G2xx devices will additionally feature capacitive touch I/O pins and UART. These intelligent peripherals allow the MSP430G2xx to do more tasks independent of the CPU, lowering average current consumption and allowing the CPU to focus on more advanced tasks.

This is especially evident in sensing, security, and other low power applications. With the MSP430G2xx's integrated ADC10 with DTC, samples and memory allocation can be done autonomously without CPU intervention. Compared to competing MCUs, the intelligent peripherals integrated into the MSP430G2xx enable lower power consumption, minimize CPU activity, and improve code density.
