e2V Metal Oxide Semiconductors
(MOS) Gas Sensor

Low heater current, wide detection range,
high sensitivity

e2v has a proprietary MOS technology utilizing state of the art MEMS technology, combining a specialized nano-particle sensing layer with a patented poly-silicone heater. This unique design creates a highly sensitive and responsive semiconductor sensor, manufactured on an automotive production line for outstanding quality and performance. These sensors are easily capable of detecting and measuring combustible and pollution gasses in parts per billion (PPB) and are suitable for many environmental, automotive and industrial applications worldwide.

A sensing layer, composed of a metal oxide, generally SnO2, is heated by a heater structure. When chemicals are absorbed on its surface, its electrical conductivity changes locally; this leads to a change of its electrical resistance. Analyzing the modifications of the resistance over time, compared with reference values, can give some information about variable gas concentrations. Semiconductor gas sensors are more complex than other sensors because they combine thermal, chemical and electrical effects.

Applications¡G

MiCS-5524/5525/5526 CO/VOC Sensor

¡´ CO Detection

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a by-product of the combustion ¡V especially the incomplete combustion ¡V of many common fuels. Gasoline powered engines, wood-burnings stoves and fireplaces, charcoal grills, kerosene heaters, and improperly vented gas or oil furnaces may produce CO.

This gas is particularly hazardous because it is colorless, tasteles£vs and odorless. The e2v CO sensors are new micro-fabricated sensors designed for CO detection applications, for example alarm systems in residential areas (UL 2034) or cabin air quality control in vehicles.

¡´ Alcohol Detection (Breathalyzer)

Over the years, breath testing has become a widely used method for quantitative determination of the level of intoxication of individuals suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The breath test is an indirect test, but has been considered to be a good estimate of the blood alcohol concentration because of the assumption that an end exhaled breath sample accurately reflects the alveolar (or deep-lung) air which is in equilibrium with the blood. The semiconducting metal oxide undergoes characteristic changes in impedance upon electronic charge transfer (e -) during catalytic reactions with deoxidizing or reducing gases, e.g. alcohol (ethanol C2H5OH) or VOCs, present in the ambient atmosphere.

¡´ Early Fire Detection

Current fire alarms on the market use two main techniques to detect fire:
¡´ Temperature sensing
¡´ Smoke sensing (ion and/or optical)

During a fire combustion passes through several phases (combustion gases, smokes and finally flames). The ability of the sensor to detect smouldering fire (gases present at the early stage of the fire) can help to react as fast as possible to evacuate a building and fight against the fire. By comparison with other sensor data, the overall reliability of the system is enhanced, false alarms are reduced, overall response time is shorter.

MiCS-2614 O3 Sensor

¡´ Ozone Sensor for Fruits and
¡@Vegetable Preservation

e2v Ozone Sensor MiCS-2614 is highly sensitive, tiny and low power device that detect accurately ozone concentration. This sensor can be combined with ozone generators to destroy ethylene gas given off by some fruits during ripening. Placed in cooled storeroom this allows slowing down the ripening and extending the storage life of the other produce held in the same storage area.

Using ozone generators allows maintaining ozone level between 2 and 7 PPM. At temperature below 5¢XC and with such ozone level, it is possible to dramatically slow down ethylene production and prevent over-ripening and problems associated with aging.

MiCS-2714 NO2 Sensor / MiCS-5526 CO Sensor

¡´ Cabin Air Quality Sensor

e2v Air Quality Sensors are highly sensitive, clever devices that detect harmful gases on the roads and indicates to the people in the car the level of pollution entering the cabin of automotive vehicles. Based on this information the driver and passengers can close the recirculation flap and then enjoy a pollution-free environment inside the car.

MiCS-5914 NH3(ammonia) Sensor

¡´ Diaper Change Indicator

By placing a sensor close to a baby sleeping the characteristic odor of diaper that needs to be changed can be detected.

Diaper needs to be changed as fast as possible for the comfort of babies in order to avoid rapid degeneration of skin health.

MICS-EK1 Gas Sensor Evaluation Kit

The e2v MICS-EK1 Gas Sensor Evaluation Kit will drive the e2v range of Metal Oxide Semiconductor gas sensors and automatically measure the sensor resistance as it changes with applied gas. Sensors can be driven manually or automatically by sending simple commands through the USB interface to an on-board microcontroller.

A comprehensive set of commands is provided for use with a terminal program such as HyperTerminal. Alternatively an easy-to-use control and data logging PC application is provided on CD which gives full functionality in a few mouse-clicks. Two gas sensor sockets are provided on the PCB to allow use with two leaded devices.

Surface mount adapter boards are also available separately. One adapter PCB will plug in to both sockets and can be fitted with either a single or dual surface mount gas sensor.
